Initially marketed as a safe, easy to use alternative to the birth control pill, the Ortho Evra birth control patch has been on the market in the United States since 2002.

When it was initially introduced to the US market, much of the data used to determine the safety of Ortho Evra was either misinterpreted or erroneously extrapolated from studies of birth control pills. Many critics believe that it was a business decision to rush the product to market in order to compensate for projected profit shortfalls of the drug manufacturer Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceutical.

Compared to patients taking traditional birth control pills, Ortho Evra patients are exposed to 60% more estrogen, which has been shown repeatedly to subject patients to serious health risks, including a 300% increased risk of developing dangerous blood clots.

In fact, much of the data regarding the dangers of Ortho Evra is based on information contained in initial drug studies, but either misrepresented or ignored by Ortho-McNeil researchers and the FDA. These dangerous discrepancies were discovered only when the data was re-evaluated by independent researchers in 2005.

Since the independent researchers' corrected data report was published, evidence has mounted regarding the serious dangers of Ortho Evra. Between the drugs introduction in 2002 and 2005, 44 cases of blood clotting caused by the Ortho Evra patch-some even fatal-were reported to the FDA. Internal company documents uncovered during Ortho Evra patch lawsuits also show that Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceuticals received approximately 500 reports of serious health issues associated with the patch, compared to only 61 similar reports associated with birth control pills.

Ortho Evra, which is primarily marketed to younger women, has been shown to vastly increase the potential for these and similar problems:

  • Deep vein thrombosis (DVT), and other blood clots
  • Pulmonary embolism
  • Stroke
  • Heart attacks
  • Death
